Situated on the banks of the River Tavy, the town of Tavistock has
a history stretching back nearly 2000 years. The town has always been
an important centre and is known as the western gateway to Dartmoor.
Originally the centre of a thriving community around a thriving
community around a substantial Benedictine Abbey, the town has more
recently been the centre of the Duke of Bedford’s Westcountry estates.
The town centre was completely remodelled in the 19th Century and now
boasts one of the most complete Victorian town centres in the country.
Tavistock is well known for its good range of shopping facilities and
offers a combination of traditional family-run stores along with well
known high street shops.
The town’s educational facilities are regarded as some of the best in
the region. Covering all ages, Tavistock can offer both state and
independent schools that have acquired excellent reputations.
Tavistock has a wealth of modern sporting and leisure facilities,

Tavistock is situated on the edge of Dartmoor, just 12 miles from the
A30 dual carriageway and 15 miles from the Plymouth and the A38. The
nearest main station is at Plymouth on the Penzance/London Paddington
main line. Plymouth airport is just 11 miles from Tavistock at
Derriford. Regular bus services connect Tavistock with Plymouth,
Okehampton and beyond.
