Listed Building Works
Wortham Manor, Lifton, Devon
“Wortham Manor lies in the depths of the Devonshire countryside, hard
by a farmyard, in a wonderfully peaceful setting. It is a manor house
of delightfully human scale and great serenity. Sadly, like many other
houses of its kind, it has progressively and seriously deteriorated.
Thanks to its good fortune in being acquired by the Landmark Trust, it
has not only been rescued but lovingly restored and now provides three
holiday flats so that visitors may, for a short spell, enjoy living
there.
The very considerable repair work needed to preserve this beautiful
building took five years to complete. The foundations needed
underpinning and unstable walls, roof and chimney rebuilding, to name
only a few of the major tasks. The principal ground floor rooms have
been restored and left as common rooms so as not to destroy their
richness of architectural detail and carved woodwork, and conversion
of the rest of the building into flats has been achieved without
damage to the other remaining feature.
The perfection and faithfulness of the workmanship are truly
impressive, and it is heart-warming to find that there are still
craftsmen with the dedication and skill to carry out this kind of
work.”
